Create + Cultivate

I had the pleasure of attending Create + Cultivate yesterday, a conference for female entrepreneurs in the digital space and I just cannot. stop. smiling. What an incredible day filled with powerful, inspiring panelists who really pour their hearts and souls, 24/7, into nurturing their business. I’ve always been passionate about writing and launching a more public platform where I can share my creativity and my love for food, adventure, and travel, but my full-time job responsibilities have always held me back from making a real, meaningful commitment towards maintaining a blog.

Needless to say, I’m 100% inspired from yesterday’s conference and have decided that this is the year I’m going to truly launch mrs gcg and be bold about sharing my content with the world. Stay tuned for what’s to come 🙂 DSC00396 IMG_7180 IMG_7210

Dining Out: Trattoria Ultimo

My dining experience this past Saturday night was truly a special one. Maybe it’s because SG and I were badly in need of a date night, or maybe it’s because we ventured outside our usual go-to neighborhoods and into Ukrainian Village. I just know that I’m going to remember my dinner at Trattoria Ultimo for a very, very long time. I’m already dying to go back and can’t wait to tell all my friends about the amazing service, cozy interiors and most importantly, the FOOD.

To start with, any Italian restaurant that’s BYOB is a win in my book. SG and I are currently on a major red wine kick, so we picked up one of the staff favorites from The Noble Grape and made our way to Trattoria Ultimo, a hole-in-the-wall BYOB Italian place between Damen & Winchester Avenue. The restaurant looks very unassuming from the outside, but as soon as you enter, you can feel its warmth and intimacy. There are only 6-7 tables in the restaurant, and the kitchen is in close quarters to the dining area. I seriously felt like I was in an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations and visiting an Italian grandmother’s kitchen in Sicily or Rome. While I love a trendy, ‘scene-y’ restaurant as much as any other 20-something, sometimes a simple, hole-in-the-wall dining experience can be even more special.

We were greeted by the owner of the restaurant, who treated us with impeccable service the entire night. The regular menu has limited options, but they have a long list of specials that the owner handed to us on a small chalkboard. I love little details like that – adds so much to the overall dining experience! While the entrees were on the pricey side (average of $20), it was all SO worth it – the ingredients were fresh and organic, and the pasta handmade. Everything was delicious, but the prosciutto and burrata appetizer deserves a special mention. Served with bread, a scrumptious olive fig, and delicately seasoned tomatoes, the appetizer was just perfect. So creamy and flavorful – I would have been happy eating just that all night.

Midwest Road Trips: Madison, Wisconsin

Last weekend, the hubs and I desperately needed a getaway from Chicago, so we decided to visit his sister in Madison, Wisconsin. I was just excited to have a low-key weekend playing with our adorable nieces, and we ended up having such a wonderful time exploring Madison with the family. It’s such an adorable college town, the weather was AMAZING (seriously, how does the Midwest go from being in the 70s to low 40s in the span of a week?!), and the food was so fresh and delicious.

Having grown up in major cities overseas, I’ve always been bit of a big city snob, but I’m really starting to appreciate the slower pace and natural beauty of smaller towns in the US. Maybe it’s because I’m entering a new phase in my life, or maybe it’s because I’m just getting older, but the thought of moving out of a big city like Chicago doesn’t freak me out anymore. There’s so much to appreciate about small towns! Madison in the fall is simply stunning with all its biking and hiking trails. I definitely want to come back in the summer/next fall to explore all its natural beauty.

The highlight of the trip was a visit to Dane County Farmers’ Market, right at the heart of Capitol Square. I’ve been to many farmers markets in Canada and California (a post about our recent Cali trip coming up soon!), but this was one of the best markets I’ve been to. So many amazing stalls with delicious cheeses (it’s Wisconsin, after all), fresh vegetables, warm baked goods, and more. We picked up some homemade jam, gouda, rhubarb pie, and the most authentic Indonesian Nasi Goreng I’ve had since my years in Jakarta!

County Barbeque: Cool Vibes & Good Grub

My husband and I have recently been hooked onto anything and everything Anthony Bourdain. We LOVE his show The Mind of a Chef, and ever since we saw the barbeque episode, we’ve had some hangry cravings for brisket. And I’m not even a huge fan of BBQ!

So tonight, we found ourselves wandering around Chicago’s Little Italy and ended up at County Barbeque, a super cute-slash-hipster joint on Taylor St. I don’t hang out in Little Italy or Greektown nearly enough – everything about the neighborhood is just so freaking charming. That’s what I love about Chicago – all the wonderful different neighorhoods with their own unique character. So much to experience in one city, you just never get bored.

Our meal was great – awesome drinks (get the Whisky Splash cocktail), amazing customer service, and decent food. The brisket sandwich (far right) wasn’t as tender as I had hoped, but all in all, a solid experience. I’d definitely come back with a crew for the ambience. Bonus points for the incredible blues music playing the entire time.

Indian Comfort Food: Paneer Makhani

Fall is officially here in Chicago, which means it’s time to take out those pea coats, woollen scarves, and boots out of their summer slumber. This is also that time of the year when my body begs for carb-loaded, hearty meals to make it through those miserable Midwestern winter months.

So when I had Columbus Day off last week, I decided to get all my spices out and prepare my favorite Indian comfort food – chicken biryani, a delicious rice pilaf, and paneer makhani, a creamy cottage cheese curry. I had never made paneer makhani before and always assumed it was too complicated to try at home. After searching recipes online (there are so many to choose from, it’s overwhelming!), I finally found one on Show Me The Curry that seemed pretty simple and easy to follow.

The results – oh. my. GOD. I only have this one Instagram picture unfortunately (this was before I decided to start a blog), but I wish you could see the curry close up! The paneer was scrumptious – completely hit the spot, and so easy to make.

Here’s my slightly revised version of the Show Me The Curry Recipe:

Recipe for Paneer Makhani 

Cut a 14 oz block of paneer (I got mine from Costco – surprisingly delicious!) into small-ish squares. Then, chop up one tomato and crush the pieces so that you have one cup of crushed tomatoes. If you’re seriously low on supplies, you can substitute with ketchup.

Heat up some oil and add four tablespoons (a little less than half a stick) of butter. Once the pan is hot, add 1.5 teaspoons of garlic paste and ginger paste and saute for a minute or so. Add in the crushed tomatoes and 1 teaspoon of coriander powder, garam masala, a pinch of red chilli powder and salt to taste. Cook for a minute or until the oil separates. Add in the paneer squares and mix until they’re coated by the spices and tomatoes. Then, add half a glass of water and simmer for five minutes. Lower the heat, add 1/3 a cup of heavy whipping cream (the recipe calls for 1/2 but it’s a little too rich and heavy) and mix gently. Allow it to come to a boil, then add a pinch of sugar.

As the recipe says, garnish with cilantro and serve hot! Best with brown or white rice.

UPDATE: I tried this recipe one year later subbing the heavy whipping cream with 1 tablespoon of greek yogurt and it was just as delicious! Healthier alternative with the same great taste.

Wedding Mood Boards: Midnight in Venice

When I started planning my big fat Indian wedding over a year ago, I had my heart set on a Midnight in Venice reception theme. I knew I wanted a cobalt and gold lehenga*, dazzling midnight blue/silver/gold florals and decor, and Venetian masks for guests to take fabulous pictures with. I spent hours scouring Pinterest and Indian wedding blogs, but never found pictures of a real wedding with a Midnight in Venice reception theme. Instead, as all brides-to-be do these days, I created a private Pinterest board and collected as many pictures of all things midnight blue & Venetian to guide my decor inspiration for my dream reception.

I highly recommend creating a mood board to figure out what colors and style most speak to you for your big day. For me, I knew I wanted something more glamorous and glitzy for the reception, since the colors for my other wedding events were extremely soft, feminine and romantic.

I mean, just look at that picture of Venice at night. I could just get lost in those colors. The perfect inspiration for a classy reception!

Thanks to my mood board and the amazing work of our decor team, our reception decor/mood/overall vibe was pretty spot on. We didn’t have as much emphasis on the Venetian part of the mood board as I would have liked (turns out Venetian masks are pretty expensive), but everything else was simply perfect. If any of you are struggling to find a color theme for your Indian reception, I really think blue & gold is the perfect choice – classy, timeless and elegant.
